SATNAV (Science and Technology News and Views) Magazine have had a very eventful and exciting year. We’ve published issues 14 and 15, in which we explored Science in Nature and Science in Film and TV respectively. We had a fantastic range of submissions for both issues which explored many different areas of science. Take a look at our website to see our magazines.
This has been a year of firsts! SATNAV took part in organising the first University Media Ball, which was an incredible night and a great opportunity to socialise with other communication and media societies. We also had the pleasure of covering the first ever EPS Trophy (a College-wide sports tournament), with journalists on site throughout the day to interview players and capture spirit of the event. This is indicative of SATNAV’s recent expansion into EPS journalism. SATNAV were also invited to cover AstroSoc’s Tea Talk and Telescope event in February, which welcomed Dr Sarah Matthews to share some of her work in solar physics.
We had the honour to cover both the EPS Christmas Lecture with Simon Singh and the Distinguished Lecture with Professor David Phillips. Both included a roundtable discussion and exclusive SATNAV interview where we could ask them about their remarkable careers and pick their brains about a variety of topics.
Another aim this year was to increase collaborative efforts with societies around campus. In the first semester we collaborated with the Linguist Magazine by organising a joint pub quiz and doing an article swap where we explored the complex relationship between language and science. In the second semester we collaborated with the Beyond My Ethnicity Magazine to put on a film screening of Hidden Figures in celebration of International Women’s Day, followed by a panel discussion. We also did an article swap to explore the issues of equality and diversity in science.
We are very pleased to introduce our new committee:

If you'd like to get involved with the magazine please let us know. As well as writing articles for each issue of SATNAV, we are publishing online-exclusives that are not bound to a theme. You could interview an academic, cover a scientific event, or anything else you can think of that relates to science. As always, don't hesitate to drop us an email or Facebook message if you have any thoughts or suggestions — we'd love to hear from you!
Finally, if you like what you’ve been reading please nominate us for an EPS Societies’ Award! We’ve worked incredibly hard this year, not only for the magazine but also in building relationships across the University, and would love to take home a trophy. We need your help!
