The Lapworth Museum of Geology has a range of targeted virtual sessions, activities and loan boxes for learners young and old, bringing rocks, fossils, earthquakes and volcanoes to life. All of the activities and interactive online teaching sessions are curriculum-linked and have been specially created by education experts to inspire the next generation of earth scientists.
Free tools and activities on offer include;
Virtual Museum Objects (all Key Stages)
Explore some of the exceptional objects from one of the UK’s most outstanding geological collections in the virtual museum. Young learners can select and inspect the curious objects, and discover more about where and how they were discovered.
Virtual Loans Box (Key Stages 1 and 2)
This workbook contains information about the incredible fossils in the museum collection. It introduces fossils to learners, discusses how fossils are formed and explores the different types of fossil. The workbook also includes links to the virtual museum and fun, educational activity sheets.
Arts Award Discover at Home (KS2
Fun and engaging activities for young people to take part in at home or at school, in order to gain an Arts Award Discover certificate for free.
Secondary Schools Online Programme (KS3, KS4, KS5)
Sessions can include a virtual tour of the Lapworth Museum and, for KS5 students, an interactive session with a lecturer from the University of Birmingham on an earth science topic of their choice. Primary Schools Online Programme (KS1, KS2)
Sessions are designed to engage and inspire pupils with the wonders of rocks, fossils, volcanoes and earthquakes. From activity ideas to talks or objects in the classroom, the Lapworth team can help bring Earth Sciences to life. All sessions are free and must be booked in advance.
