The performance of the School of Civil Engineering in the Research Excellence Framework, the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions, has shown that the majority of its research was rated as internationally excellent.
Professor Mark Sterling, Head of School, said: “Our distinguished research is clustered around two over-arching themes. The first of these is Transport Engineering where we are key partners in the Birmingham, Centre for Railway Research and Education – a world leading research centre in this field – as well as looking at the engineering challenges around other forms of transport. Our research theme of Sustainability and Resilience focuses on environmental engineering, structural engineering, wind, and fluid mechanics, all of which have much interdisciplinary links and potential for collaborations. We are a supportive research environment where PhD students and world-leading researchers work side by side towards in support of our research objectives”
The School of Civil Engineering is part of the University’s College of Engineering and Physical Sciences which draws together research strengths across the academic schools to focus on the wider research themes of Advanced Manufacturing, Science Frontiers, and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability. Professor John Bridgeman, College Director of Research, said: “The School of Civil Engineering is involved in research that is inherently interdisciplinary across the University and with external partners. Its research tackles fundamental societal challenges and makes an enormous contribution to the research mission and objectives of the College.”
