We are delighted to announce that professors Julie Allan and Kalwant Bhopal have been awarded Fellowships of the Academy of Social Sciences.
They have been recognised after an extensive peer review process for the excellence and impact of their work through the use of social science for public benefit. Fellows of the Academy are drawn from practitioners and policymakers as well as academics across the social sciences.
Professor Julie Allan has a particular interest in educational theory and the insights offered through poststructural and social capital analyses. Her work encompasses inclusive education, disability studies and children’s rights and is both empirical and theoretical. Julie has been advisor to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly and the Dutch and Queensland Governments and has worked extensively with the Council of Europe.
Professor Kalwant Bhopal has focussed on the achievements and experiences of minority ethnic groups in education. She has conducted research on exploring discourses of identity and intersectionality examining the lives of Black minority ethnic groups as well as examining the marginal position of Gypsies and Travellers. Her research specifically explores how processes of racism, exclusion and marginalisation operate in predominantly White spaces with a focus on social justice and inclusion. More recently she has conducted research focussing on the position of minority ethnic academics in higher education. Her research on this area has been used to inform policy making in higher education, particularly the development of the Race Equality Charter mark.
