A project working with the Birmingham Rep Theatre to promote sustainability in the creative industries is one of several new PhD scholarships being offered by the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action (BISCA).
The PhD opportunity – which has a deadline of Friday 22 August – is one of a set promoted through BISCA's 'Adaptation and Resilience' theme that will be competitively selected and is especially of interest to arts and humanities scholars.
“The UK creative and cultural sector is economically highly significant, generating substantial economic value,” says Professor Adam Ledger (Drama and Theatre Arts, University of Birmingham), who is supervising the project with Dr Nana O Bonsu (Business School, University of Birmingham). “This project looks at how sustainable practices and organisational development can be introduced, modelled, tested and scaled up in the sector.
“It offers an opportunity for a truly interdisciplinary enquiry and methodology, working with Birmingham Rep Theatre, a nationally significant, Birmingham-based organisation, and other potential local and regional partners. It will track current adaptation interventions while introducing new sustainable creative solutions and business and creative perspectives.”
Ultimately, the project aims to develop sustainability models that are applicable to other creative industries, such as music, dance and cultural events – all of which face similar organisational, material, and practical challenges.
Candidates will benefit from arts and business expertise and research training, producing meaningful data and outputs that will benefit both the research and industry sectors. Students will also join a vibrant, interdisciplinary research network at BISCA and should ideally have a background in theatre or the cultural industries with an interest in business development.
