The International Accounting and Finance MSc, on offer since the 1960s, encompasses accounting in its international, public and private contexts, corporate financial management, private sector investment and foreign exchange markets.

It aims to give you a deep knowledge of the theoretical and empirical literature that provides the background to understanding changes and innovations in accounting and finance, where you will also acquire a range of skills that can be used to solve real-world problems.

By combining with Kaplan Financial to offer the ACCA this 12 month pathway enables you to leave the University of Birmingham with an MSc and the completion of two ACCA modules; Advanced Performance Management and Advanced Financial Management.  This is a unique programme on offer exclusively to students of the International Accounting and Finance MSc at Birmingham. 

This programme is only available for those who have a strong background in both accounting and finance; you will need to meet both the MSc entry requirements and those for the ACCA; please see the entry requirements below.

When you apply for this MSc with ACCA you must upload a transcript showing modules studied and mark achieved to date. If you have not yet completed your Bachelor’s degree, please ensure that you also upload a transcript or an official document which shows the modules you are studying in your final year, and any marks achieved so far.

This 12-month pathway includes tuition from Kaplan Financial for two ACCA professional modules; Advanced Performance Management and Advanced Financial Management

The MSc International Accounting and Finance Programme is accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which means you will be awarded exemptions from certain papers of the ACCA examinations upon successful completion of the programme. Companies such as HSBC, BP, Unilever and Deloitte visit the School to run workshops and business games, ensuring that you have the opportunity to put the theory you have learned into practice. Particular programmes also offer the ability to obtain first-hand experience in the form of either work placements abroad or UK based consultancy projects with companies such as Jaguar, Aston Villa Football Club and Cadbury.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (2:1 or higher) or postgraduate diploma from an UK university or equivalent. The degree must be in a relevant subject and applicants must meet the following module criteria: 

For applicants with a degree in Accounting, Finance, Accounting and Finance, International Accounting, International Finance or International Accounting and Finance:

  • One module with minimum 2.1 grade from: Accounting, Financial Accounting, Corporate Reporting, Financial reporting, Senior Financial Accounting and Theory or Accounting
  • One module with minimum 2.1 grade from: Business Finance, Corporate Finance, Finance, Financial Management, International Finance or International Financial Management 

All other Applicants:

  • One module with minimum 2.1 grade from: Accounting, Financial Accounting, Corporate Reporting, Financial reporting, Senior Financial Accounting and Theory or Accounting
  • One module with minimum 2.1 grade from: Business Finance, Corporate Finance, Finance, Financial Management, International Finance or International Financial Management
  • Two modules with minimum 2.1 grade from a list of 22 other possible modules, including Auditing, Investments, Money and Banking etc.

Standard English language requirements apply (IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band).

If you are currently studying at a Chinese university, please view our specific entry requirements including our list of acceptable universities for further study at Birmingham.

For the ACCA students must have completed the nine ACCA foundation exams and be able to provide proof of this upon applying by assessment OR by exemption based on study for your undergraduate degree or otherwise.

Monday 2 July 2018 is the application deadline for international students who require a visa to study in the United Kingdom. We are not able to consider applications for 2018 made after this date. A a new application should be made for September 2019. Applications will reopen for 2019 entry by 21 September 2018.

Birmingham Business School was the first business school in the country and has built on its reputation ever since to ensure that you get the best learning and teaching experience.

The MSc programme consists of six modules, including compulsory ones on Financial Accounting Theory and Policy and Theory of Financial Management. You can also choose from a wide range of options and must submit a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

Taught modules contribute towards two thirds of your final assessment and your dissertation contributes the other third. Modules are assessed using written examinations and coursework. Coursework can take a variety of forms, including:
