Title: Why Study MSc Data Science? | University of Birmingham
Duration: 01.42
Bathila: My name is Bathila and I'm currently pursuing a Master’s in Data Science at the University of Birmingham.
For my Bachelor's, I did Astrophysics, so coming from a non-computing background, the University of Birmingham is one of the few universities that offers a conversion course in data science. Which is specifically targeted at students who do not have prior experience in computer science.
My favourite aspect of the course is the diverse range of assessment types we have, ranging from quizzes, to exams, to lab sessions, to practicals. They all help apply real-world scenarios into practice.
My absolute favourite module has been Storing and Managing Data, which goes through the ethics of machine learning and AI.
The University of Birmingham has an amazing student life, so while I did spend a lot of my time studying data science, I also spent my time enjoying what the University of Birmingham has to offer. I'm also part of different societies, such as the Robotics Society and the Sri Lankan Society. I also engage in sports such as archery and swimming.
Looking ahead, I know that the experiences and the knowledge I gain from this course will be invaluable for my career, whether working on AI research, or whether I'll be in a data analytics team in the financial sector, or anything else that interests me.
I have been building a professional network here, collaborating with my peers and my professors, and gaining hands-on knowledge which makes me job ready when I graduate.
The course caters to the need of students where we have a plethora of resources to imbibe the knowledge that ultimately gives practical exposure through projects and labs. I have been able to gain the required skillset of a Data Scientist through the imparted knowledge and learning. In addition to this, the collaboration of UoB with The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is another major reason as to why I applied to this course.

Teaching is led by our world-leading academics in data science, giving you the opportunity to learn both about the foundations and latest advancements in the field.
You'll focus on fundamental data science principles. You'll complete three core modules that will teach how to program for data science tasks, how to store and manage data and core artificial intelligence techniques to analyse data.
Teaching is delivered predominantly through lectures and labs, with assessment provided through coursework and/or examination, depending on the module. Coursework is typically completed during the term and exams in the main summer exam period.
This term teaches more advanced data science approaches, and integrates, consolidates and applies the principles learned in the first term through a group project. It also consists of three compulsory modules.
Teaching includes lectures, labs and supervision. Assessment includes coursework and/or exam, depending on the module.
After the main summer exam period, the summer is dedicated to your individual data science project. You'll work closely with an academic supervisor on a data science project.
This may involve going through the whole data science process to solve a problem, and/or investigating state-of-the-art data science approaches, and/or developing data science tools, among others.
