Award Description

The Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures (BRIHC) is delighted to announce exciting new scholarships for doctoral research programmes.

Founded in March 2015, the BRIHC provides a dynamic and interdisciplinary focal point for the research conducted across the School of History and Cultures. Crossing traditional boundaries of chronology, geography, and methodology, it brings together scholars from the departments of History, Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, and African Studies.

Value of Award

The BRIHC scholarships offer both fees-only and fees plus maintenance awards.

Scholarships will cover tuition fees paid at the Home / EU rate. Overseas students are eligible to apply, but will receive the Home/EU fee as a contribution towards fees. The fees plus maintenance scholarship also includes additional support per year towards living expenses for full-time applicants -  this is currently £14,553p.a.

Fees and maintenance are adjusted pro-rata for part-time applicants.

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship is open to candidates interested in pursuing full- or part-time doctoral research in any of the disciplines and fields covered by the School of History and Cultures. These awards are open to campus-based applicants commencing their studies in September 2018. Applications for funding can only be considered alongside an application to study.

Applications are also open to current students (although you would need to have at least 12 months of study (or part-time equivalent) in normal registration remaining at the start of the award (excluding thesis awaited/writing-up).

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a track record of excellence in their field and be able to meet the normal entry requirements for the University of Birmingham’s doctoral research programmes.  Successful applicants will be expected to engage beyond their specialisms and contribute to the creation of a uniquely lively and mutually enriching research environment across the School.

How to Apply

These awards are advertised with the College of Arts and Law Doctoral Scholarships - please refer to this page for full application details and application forms.  The procedure is the same for these awards.
