Award Description

The Department of Modern Languages is pleased to offer five Home/EU fees-only bursaries for students beginning research Masters programmes (MA by Research, MRes) in 2020-2021, available from the Paul and Henry Woltmann Bequest.

Value of Award

The bursaries will cover the cost of Home/EU fees (or a contribution towards Overseas fees).

Eligibility Criteria

The bursaries are reserved for current final year students of Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham. These bursaries are available for full-time and part-time study and Distance Learning MA by Research. Applications in all fields of study are welcome, but preference may be given to applications in the following particularly vibrant departmental research areas:

  • (Peripheral) Modernisms
  • The Global South
  • Exile, Migration and/or Cultural Memory
  • Digital Cultures/Digital Humanities in Modern Languages
  • Romance linguistics
  • Literature and Popular Culture
  • Environmental Humanities and Modern Languages
  • Literature and the Visual Arts
  • Histories, languages and cultures before 1700

Applications from BME candidates are particularly welcome.

To apply for this award, please contact the College of Arts and Law Graduate School on calpg-research@contacts.bham.ac.uk for an application form. 

Two references are also required. It is your responsibility to contact your referees and ensure that your two references are also submitted by the deadline to calpg-research@contact.bham.ac.uk with your name as the subject.

The deadline for making your application is 4pm on Friday 12th June 2020

Applications received after the final deadline or incomplete applications will not be considered.

You do not need to have applied for Masters study before applying for the bursary.

We will contact you with our decision within four weeks of the deadline.
