Award Description

The Colt Foundation was established in 1978. The Foundation supports high quality research, enables students to undertake higher degrees at UK universities, and organises and financially supports scientific conferences in the occupational health research sector.

Each year, the Foundation awards up to four Fellowships, to enable holders to study for a PhD in occupational or environmental health at a UK university.

Value of Award

The Fellowship provides three elements of funding:

  • Stipend: the rate for the stipend in 2020/21 is £15,285.
  • Expenses: up to £5,000 per year towards research expenses.
  • Fees: the Foundation provides full fees for UK/EU students; where applicants from other countries are required to pay higher fees, they are expected to make up the difference from other sources.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are open to UK, EU and overseas students, wishing to study for a PhD in occupational health or environmental science.

Fellowships are awarded for three years, but applications for awards over shorter periods from applicants who have already started a PhD, but do not have full funding from other sources to cover completion of their degree will also be considered.

How to Apply

There is no an application form, but the applications should include:

  • An outline of the proposed research, including the scientific questions that it will address, the data that will be collected, and how they will be analysed to answer the study questions.
  • The applicant’s CV.
  • A detailed letter of support from the proposed supervisor.
  • Contact details of two referees.

Applications should be submitted via email to the Foundation’s Director, Mrs Tash Heydon. Alternatively, applications can be sent by post to: Mrs Tash Heydon, Director, Unit E, The Old Bakery, Golden Square, Petworth, West Sussex, GU28 0AP.
