Resources to find opportunities

Response-mode opportunities

‘Response mode’ refers to standing schemes where investigator-led, bottom-up proposals will be assessed by standing Boards, Panels and Committees.

Both Wellcome and MRC – major funders of research in MDS – have standing response-mode schemes that accept global health research to any competition. Please see the MRC website for a statement on their support for global health research through ‘normal’ Programme and Project Grants, Fellowships, and Translational Grants.  If applying to either Wellcome or the MRC, we strongly advise you to discuss this with the funder programme manager.

Managed-mode Funding Opportunities

‘Managed mode’ refers schemes time-limited schemes that typically have a limited remit, defined by the funder based on funding priorities identified through a top-down analysis of strategic gaps.

As these time-limited calls are often only live for a short while, we provide links to where UoB researchers can look up current opportunities:

The Newton Fund – specific schemes, usually run through a partner Research Council:

The Newton Fund works specifically with countries that have some existing capacity and infrastructure for research.
