European Rare Earth (Magnet) Recycling Network

EREAN

The aim of EREAN is to train 15 young researchers in the science and technology of rare earths, with emphasis on the recycling of these elements from permanent magnets.

Partner Organisations:

  • KU Leuven
  • University of Birmingham
  • Chalmers University of Technology
  • Fraunhofer IWKS
  • Solvay
  • Technische Universiteit Delft
  • Umicore
  • University of Helsinki
  • Oeko Institute EV
  • InsPyro
  • Less Common Metals
  • Magneti Ljubljana
  • MEAB Metallextraktion
  • Stena Metall
  • Treibacher Industrie

The role of Birmingham is to train 2 of the 15 young researchers for EREAN. The two main themes of this research are to increase the efficiency of extraction of rare earth magnets from end-of-life products and also to re-process the extracted magnetic materials for either solvent extraction or processing into new, high quality sintered magnets.
