We are delighted to announce that the Centre for Human Brain Health (CHBH) will welcome Professor N. Jon Shah, Director of the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine at Forschungszentrum Jülich, to present a hybrid CHBH Seminar, taking place on Friday 2nd December, 12:00-13:00. Attendance is possible either in person in 52 Prichatts Road room G16 (Lecture Theatre 1), or by registering to attend on Zoom online via the link above.

Prof Shah can be contacted on n.j.shah@fz-juelich.de.

The hour after the seminar, is reserved for optional informal discussion with the speaker and host, all are welcome to attend.

Applications of Echo Planar Imaging with Keyhole (EPIK) to Layer-Specific fMRI and Oxygen Extraction Fraction

Abstract

The background to echo planar imaging with keyhole (EPIK) forms the basis of an imaging methodology for exploring brain function. Compared with EPI, EPIK affords a superior apparent temporal resolution as well as improved spatial resolution and somewhat better immunity from susceptibility related artefacts. Results from 3T will be used to demonstrate the above advantages.

Application of EPIK at 7T has been shown to enable near whole-brain coverage with a voxel size of 0.6 x 0.0 x 0.6mm in a modest TR of 3.5s. Applications to layer-specific (depth-dependent) fMRI will be shown.

The application of EPIK at 3T, in the guise of a 10-echo sequence, has been used to rapidly map T2, T2* and T2’ enabling the calculation of an oxygen extraction map.  This rapid variant of EPIK enables the acquisition of 20 slices, 10 echoes per slice – from which the OEF maps are calculated – in only 57s. Initial results from a proof-of-concept study will be presented.
