Hello, my name is Richard Hastings and I want to welcome you to IDRIS.
I am the director of IDRIS and IDRIS is the Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute at the University of Birmingham.
We call this IDRIS for short.
IDRIS is a research group.
People at IDRIS come from different backgrounds, have different professions, and have different experiences.
We do research to help people with learning disabilities and their families.
We work with people with learning disabilities and their families to do research.
We often call this co-production.
We also work with other organisations to do research.
People in IDRIS do research with children and also with adults with learning disabilities.
We sometimes do research with people with learning disabilities who are also autistic.
Now, lots of things are unfair for people with learning disabilities and for their families.
I'm just going to mention a few things that are unfair.
So, very few people with learning disabilities have a paid job.
Children with learning disabilities are excluded from school more often than other children.
Women with learning disabilities die on average 17 years earlier than women
without learning disabilities.
People with learning disabilities and their families are more likely to live in poverty. That's to be poor.
And family members are more likely to be stressed or have mental health difficulties.
Now all of these things are unfair and IDRIS research aims to make things better for people with learning disabilities and their families.
Thank you for watching.
