Formulation Engineering

This research theme is hosted at the Centre for Formulation Engineering. We are developing solutions to problems faced by the food, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, fast-moving consumer goods and speciality products sectors.
Research areas

Bioprocessing and Bioengineering
We research biomanufacturing with continuous bioprocessing, process chromatography, magnetic separation technology, sustainable food systems and computational modelling and simulation.

Digital Manufacturing
We research Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), Dissipative Particle Dynamics, RANS modelling, Artificial intelligence, digital manufacture processes and chains for formulated structured products.

Microstructure Engineering
We research Soft matter, the design/Manufacture of emulsions, the Formulation of fluid gels and Lithography materials

Multiphase Processing
Our research spans 25 years of experience in the processing of formulated multiphase liquid products with complex rheology via flow visualisation experiments and Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Recycling of Complex Materials
We research recycling technologies for net zero materials, chemical reaction engineering, recovery development of technologies of waste, targeting critical materials and technology critical metals

Surfaces and Interfaces
We research the mechanical characterisation of micro-/nanoparticles, particle-substrate interactions, development of micromanipulation-based instruments, contact mechanics between skin and surfaces.
