Dr Ricky Joseph: Mind the Wealth Gap: Intergenerational justice and family welfare

Dr Ricky Joseph talks about his research with CHASM

Hi, my name is Ricky Joseph and I’m a research fellow within CHASM. My research interest is around financial inclusion and wealth inequality. I have a particular interest around intergenerational transmission of wealth, inequality across different groups and I am particularly interested in the way that impacts on outcomes of wellbeing.

I am currently working on a major research project with Karen Rowlingson which is called ‘Mind the Wealth Gap’ and the research project enables us to look at the way that families transmit wealth across generations. The research is unusual because we are recruiting and interviewing three generations of the same family and we are in the middle of analysing the findings and writing up the report which we hope to publish in a number of academic journals and books.

The other major research activity I am involved in is to develop an international network which enables  researchers from different organisations across the world to interact and exchange ideas and research activities and we call that INRAP. INRAP we believe will be the first time that organisations and individuals will be able to communicate and share their interests around asset-based policies as well.

I am also involved in a leading Credit Union based in Birmingham which provides a range of affordable products and services to people across the City. My involvement with the Credit Union sector enables us to make use of the research that we do within CHASM within the Credit Union sector and to try and better understand the issues facing customers and consumers around accessing affordable financial products and services.
