The commercialisation of energy technologies and services is vital for the success of our Government’s commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050. Yet many businesses do not have access to the support services needed to research, test and grow their innovations.The University of Birmingham in partnership with the Energy Systems Catapult, is looking for businesses committed to driving energy technology innovation to join the Climate Innovation Platform (CIP).
Supported by HSBC UK and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), CIP offers businesses a package of tailored support to drive the commercialisation of innovative energy products and services.
Second Low Carbon Energy Solutions Innovator Challenge launched
The application round for the second Low Carbon Energy Solutions Innovator Challenge is now open and will close at 12:00pm on Tuesday 3 May.
Ideal SMEs responding to this challenge will be seeking to enter or are active across the energy system, using technology to deliver new business models or solutions in an innovative way.
We recognise that innovations come from across all sectors of society, the programme actively welcomes applications which will help deliver an energy sector which is truly representative of the UK’s culturally diverse range of skills and innovators.
CIP has launched the application round for the second Low Carbon Energy Solutions Innovator Challenge
Applications are welcomed from businesses registered in the UK, and particularly those who can take advantage of the Climate Innovation Incubator based at Tyseley Energy Park (TEP), in Birmingham.
This challenge call will focus on:
- Innovative low carbon generation or infrastructure technologies into the built environment.
- Low carbon heating and/or cooling innovations for the built environment.
- Leveraging end user, infrastructure and network data to create new digital platforms, services and business models that accelerate the transition to net zero.
- Energy storage Innovations
- Innovative Energy from Waste.
- Innovative hydrogen generation solutions for deployment in the transport sector.
- Infrastructure innovations which accelerate the adoption of electric vehicle use.
- Energy storage and smart local energy systems innovations for network optimisation.
- Enabling active, interoperable control systems that delivers more efficient and flexible operation of the local energy system and networks.
- Innovations to decarbonise the textile sector, of particular interest would be natural solutions to decarbonise the product supply chains and unique renewable energy sources
We are looking for innovations that unlock potential, effecting all demand side vectors and supply side technologies. These products and services will aim to maximising all stakeholder’s commercial value whilst, accelerating their adoption.

Those selected for the second CIP Low Carbon Energy Solutions Innovator Challenge will have access to several linked opportunities:
Access to funding and supply chain networks
Support in identifying grant funding opportunities and routes into investor networks as well the opportunity to gain access to supply chain partners to support the development of scalable market entry demonstrators.
Access to business engagement support through University of Birmingham’s ATETA programme. This programme, designed to help SMEs improve efficiency and test new ideas, offers access to research expertise and facilities as well as research and technical support from Knowledge Exchange Fellows.
Access to a range of business development support, including financial planning, start-up mentoring, market research expertise, IP protection expertise, advice on regulation and standards, grant writing and bid development, and investor readiness and introductions.
Dedicated support team
A dedicated commercialisation team led by an Incubation Manager that will act as your direct point of contact for CIP services.
Tailored incubation and acceleration support from the Energy Systems Catapult to help address systemic barriers, de-risk innovation, help businesses scale and secure investment.
HSBC's Climate Solution Partnership
The opportunity to apply into WWF/WRI and HSBC’s Climate Solutions Partnership, the challenge for this year’s global programme being to facilitate systemic change, across the Textile sector, working with the Apparel Institute to decarbonise the industry, providing companies with the ability to shift their supply chains increasing the uptake of natural solutions and alternative fuel sources.
A select number of businesses from the CIP programme will go on to participate in HSBC’s global Climate Solutions Partnership innovation accelerator, powered by WWF’s Impactio platform, which will help further scale climate solutions, supporting business innovations in partnership with leading universities, research institutes, incubators and accelerators.
CIP offered shared workshop areas or a virtual presence at Tyseley Energy Park (TEP). Located in the heart of Birmingham, TEP is a home to the Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre and Energy Transition Centre and the UK’s first low and zero carbon refuelling station as well as the UK’s largest green hydrogen refuelling facility. Businesses based at TEP will also have access to secure and renewable power.
You will be invited to a programme of workshops and seminars to support the growth of your business.
The CIP team will work with you to identify and initiate new market opportunities, providing you with marketing insights and assessments into your industry.
THE CIP programme is able to offer manufacturing support including energy technology R&D, prototyping and access to a platform to test and demonstrate innovative ideas.
