On 22 September 2017 Dr Luke Butler and IEL Director Professor Martin Trybus were the main speakers at a conference event on “International Public Procurement: comparing the EU and the US. The case of military procurement” at the Turin Congress Centre organised by the European Law Institute at the University of Turin and supported by various sponsors.

Professor Trybus presented on “EU defence procurement law (Directive 2009/81/EC) and the impact on the US defence industries” and Professor Mario Comba (University of Turin) acted as discussant. Dr Butler (pictured) presented on “The impact of US procurement rules on EU defence industries” and Professor Roberto Caranta (University of Turin) acted as discussant.

Both Martin and Luke have done extensive research on defence procurement regulation with Martin being the author of inter alia Buying Defence and Security in Europe (CUP, 2014) and Luke having recently published his monographTransatlantic Defence Procurement (CUP, 2017).

The University of Birmingham is developing a strong research interest in Transatlantic trade law more generally with the new Innovative Training Network on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership sponsored by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Marie Curie funds and coordinated by Professor Trybus from Birmingham.
