Endodontics MSc (Distance Learning)

This three-year, part-time Masters is aimed at qualified dentists from across the globe who wish to expand their area of expertise to include advanced practice in endodontics. The programme is led by Dr Josette Camilleri, an internationally renowned clinician and researcher, and will cover the theory and practical aspects of vital pulp therapy, root canal therapy and the perio-endo-restorative interface.

Lecture based modules are delivered online by international speakers through pre-recorded videos, whilst the monthly journal club and tutorials allow for the discussion of clinical cases and lecture material. The MSc also features two residential weeks in Dubai, which make use of Swiss Endo Academy's facilities and feature lectures, hands on practicals and small group tutorials. Dental Materials Science MSc/Diploma/Certificate

The one-year, full-time (and two-year part-time) Masters programme welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds from clinical practitioners and dental technicians who are required to teach the subject, to those pursuing a career in a related research field, whether having a clinical or non-clinical undergraduate education, and whether from the UK or abroad.

There are very few aspects of dentistry that do not rely on materials, and the science of dental materials is arguably the most important subject that a dental practitioner, allied teacher or researcher should learn.

This programme provides a foundation in key materials science principles and training skills for successful research and publication, towards the development of the next generation of materials and processes. There are six core modules, 20 credits each and one 60 credit module:

  • Foundation in Materials Science
  • Applied Polymer Science
  • Ceramic and Cement Systems
  • Metals and Metal Alloys
  • Biological Interactions of Dental Materials
  • Emerging Materials and Related Technologies
  • Final Research Project – 60 credits

For each core module  a practical component will provide students with full training on a wide range of state-of-the-art research equipment fostering robust critical analysis and techniques for scientific research. Each of the six, 20-credit and one, 60-credit modules will run separately and consecutively to allow for part-time study, and also to provide logical progression and development of interrelated concepts and research skills.

Restorative Dentistry MSc/Diploma/Certificate (Distance Learning)

This two-year, part-time course is designed for dentists wishing to enhance quality, predictability and enjoyment when managing restorative cases in a wide range of subject areas. The course has a very high percentage of practical content designed to fit into the busy schedule of general dental practitioners.

The course is suitable for both UK and international dentists at all stages of their clinical careers. For the duration of course students must be employed in suitable clinical setting that will provide patients requiring a range of restorative treatments, on which case report exercises are based.

The primary aim of this course is to enhance the quality and predictability of patient care. In addition, studying for the MSc is expected to significantly increase your professional satisfaction and confidence when carrying out a wide range of restorative procedures. We expect the development of Masters-level clinical skills to significantly increase your employability as well as your potential for private income and access to prospective NHS advanced care pathways.

The high level of practical content will take you through a unique programme of structured simulation and clinical exercises to be carried out in practice and on the residential courses. Comprehensive online resources are supplemented by two, week-long, residential courses using the state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities at University of Birmingham’s £50 million Dental School.

Postgraduate research degrees

You may study for an MSc by Research or PhD degree in a stimulating and well-equipped research environment. Our research teams bring together both clinical and non-clinical researchers in partnerships that provide the opportunity to link together a range of multidisciplinary expertise. This approach allows a particularly strong and supportive environment in which you can undertake your training and benefit from interaction with leading researchers.

You undertake formal training to develop the skills required within your research. While at the School you have at least two supervisors with whom you have regular contact, and who provide guidance in your learning and research. During this time, you are encouraged to present work in seminars and at conferences, both to develop your presentation skills and network with other researchers.

Our research has a strong translational focus, being driven by clinical questions, and aims to provide novel diagnostic and therapeutic solutions to the most common oral and general health problems. Fundamental to the delivery of high-quality research is the range of world-class research and clinical facilities, including state-of-the-art laboratories, which our researchers and students have access to. Recent investment in these facilities, through an equipment grant from the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, ensures that our staff and students have access to the latest technology and equipment and maximises our opportunities for accelerating research innovation for patient care and well-being.

Examples of our research include:

  • Demonstrating the importance of growth factors and other bioactive molecules sequestered within dental tissues in driving tissue responses to disease and clinical outcomes for the tooth.
  • The development of novel treatments for dental and oral tissue repair based on stem cell and biomaterial tissue regenerative technologies.
  • Leading research into the redox biology of oral diseases and how micronutritional strategies can regulate oral inflammation.
  • Pioneering the development of assays for biomarkers of periodontitis, leading to the development of diagnostic technologies in routine clinical use.
  • Epidemiological research on the links between chronic periodontitis and systemic disease, in particular rheumatoid arthritis and chronic kidney disease.
  • Pioneering involvement in the National Dental Health Surveys (Office of National Statistics) for children and adults leading to the unravelling of major trends in oral disease patterns over 30 years. This is crucial to informing future oral health care policy and directing NHS resources to those in most need.
  • The development of novel digital image processing/analysis techniques in oral pathology to provide accurate, evidence-based diagnostic decisions and reliable prognostic tools for oral cancer.
  • The epigenetics of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and the role of chronic inflammation in the origins of OSCC.
  • Development of novel dental and orthopaedic materials to improve the longevity of dental restorations and the outcome of many orthopaedic procedures.
  • Investigations into the vibration characteristics of dental ultrasonic instruments and powered toothbrushes, which aimto influence the design and development of ultrasound dental instruments and improve patient care.
  • Prevalence studies in children and adolescents on dental erosion and tooth wear and their causes, underpinned by laboratory mechanistic studies on both erosion and toothpaste abrasivity.
  • Research on the nature and role of education in dentistry, particularly the role and impact of e-learning.
