Birmingham Medical School is based within the Institute of Clinical Sciences in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. As such, Birmingham Medical School offers staff with a broad range of expertise and experience to deliver education and research. Our staff are experienced clinicians, researchers and teachers who offer the in depth understanding and breadth of subject areas required for the education of the future of the NHS.

Prem Kumar is an Emeritus Professor. 

His research interests are in the field of chemoreception, with a particular emphasis on carotid body and chemotransduction mechanisms in health and disease and in the reflex responses to hypoxia and changes in blood glucose concentrations. He is a key member of the Birmingham Arterial Chemoreceptor and Hypoxia Group.

Kate Thomas has responsibility for leading a team of academics in developing and managing the MBChB programme. She has extensive experience in Medical Education with a particular interest in helping students to develop their professional identity.  She is an Education Associate of the General Medical Council and was part of the GMC group which wrote the current Outcomes for Graduates.

Dr Gillian Condé is the Head of Birmingham Medical School. She manages the team of academics developing and delivering the programmes within the Medical School.  She also has a cross-college role as the College lead for Post Graduate Taught Education.

As Deputy Programme Director and Academic Year Lead for the MBChB Programme, Alison has responsibility for Programme Governance. Alison is also the academic lead for Years 1 and 2 of the 5-year Programme.

Alison also teaches across a broad range of undergraduate courses at the University including Dental Surgery, Biomedical Science, Bioscience and also Postgraduate courses.
