Our staff

Birmingham Medical School is based within the Institute of Clinical Sciences in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. As such, Birmingham Medical School offers staff with a broad range of expertise and experience to deliver education and research. Our staff are experienced clinicians, researchers and teachers who offer the in depth understanding and breadth of subject areas required for the education of the future of the NHS. 

 

Professor Una Martin

Professor Una Martin is Dean of Birmingham Medical School and Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Birmingham. She is a Consultant in General Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust where she leads the Hypertension Service.  Professor Martin is also President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society.

David Adams has a number of leadership positions within the University of Birmingham. In addition to his university posts, David is Director of Birmingham Health Partners, which brings together clinical, scientific and academic excellence across an integral medical and life sciences campus.

Prem Kumar holds key roles in ensuring the leadership of all teaching programmes delivered in the Institute of Clinical Sciences working with colleagues to ensure their appropriate delivery and assessment. 

Prem has also worked in a number of key positions within the Physiological Society of UK and Ireland to help promote Physiology as a subject.

Kate Thomas has responsibility for leading a team of academics in developing and managing the MBChB programme. She has extensive experience in Medical Education with a particular interest in helping students to develop their professional identity.  She is an Education Associate of the General Medical Council and was part of the GMC group which wrote the current Outcomes for Graduates.

Jamie Coleman has responsibility for leading the team of teaching staff and academics in developing and managing the Physician Associate Studies course. He has a strong interest in educational research, alongside Drug Safety, Health Informatics and ePrescribing, and Hypertension Research.

As Deputy Programme Director and Academic Year Lead for the MBChB Programme, Alison has responsibility for Programme Governance. Alison is also the academic lead for Years 1 and 2 of the 5-year Programme.

Alison also teaches across a broad range of undergraduate courses at the University including Dental Surgery, Biomedical Science, Bioscience and also Postgraduate courses.
