An introduction to research at our School

A welcome and introduction to research at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Science from our Head of School, Sarah Aldred

Transcript

Hi my name's Sarah Aldred, and I am the head of the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences. I'm an exercise biochemist and I think one of the really lovely things about our school is that we are really interdisciplinary so we cover all aspects of Sports Science from Psychology through Physiology, Nutrition through motor control Rehabilitation, all the way through to physiotherapy. What makes us I guess quite unique, is that flavour and that mix of disciplines and we also really are able to to sort of offer students a different perspective by blending those disciplines. Our strength really is in the Excellence of our research that underpins all of those different different disciplines and as a student you would get access to that research in a number of different ways so that research informs our teaching and we bring it into the lectures and really talk to you about the things that we are doing to lead our different disciplines forward and you also get the opportunity to go into our Laboratories or out into the field dependent on the things that you're working on so we do have teaching laboratories where we probably teach our research techniques in a more structured way and then through our programmes you also get the opportunity to do a research project. Every student does a research project in their final year and that can be either in our Labs out in a in a sporting setting, in a clinic with some of our stakeholders who are interested in what we do. So for example, we work with governing bodies in sport to really think about how we change and influence practice so you as a student would get the chance to to Really interact with with real world settings and and interact with that research we have three main research themes within the school that overarch our research so they are sport participation to Performance exercise and health and then motor control and Rehabilitation which includes all of our physiotherapy work. We really look forward to welcoming you to the School.
