Life as a researcher

At the University of Birmingham, no two research journeys are the same. Our postgraduate researchers are a vibrant, diverse community — each following a pathway shaped by their passions, ideas, and ambitions.
  • Your academic community

As a Birmingham postgraduate researcher, you’ll work on real-world challenges, build a global network, and unlock opportunities you never imagined.

You'll be joining one of the UK’s largest postgraduate communities. Our 14,000+ postgraduates make up around 40 per cent of our student population.

Life at Birmingham is about far more than studying a degree or course. It’s about getting involved in research groups, publications, talks, conferences and more. Our friendly postgraduate community has so much to offer. We’d love to welcome you in.

  • Your social community

There are many ways to get involved with our student community. At the heart of it all is the Guild of Students, helping everyone connect and grow together.

The Guild of Students is your Students’ Union. Study with us and you’ll automatically become a member. Our community elects a team of seven full-time and seven part-time student Officers to lead the Guild each year. This includes a Postgraduate Officer who’ll represent your interests, both on and off campus.

Celebrating your research

The Postgraduate Research Festival

This is the University of Birmingham’s biggest event for postgraduate research. Students from all subjects can share their work with others across the University and beyond.

The Festival has a full programme with events for staff, students, and University partners. It includes a poster competition, research image display, and high profile guest speakers.

Participating in the Festival enhances your skills in preparing research posters, effective presentation skills, communicating research to a non-specialist audience and networking skills. Attending the Festival gives an insight into research from postgraduate researchers across the institution, and a chance to reflect on your work in new ways.

Three Minute Thesis

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland, in which doctoral researchers have just three minutes to deliver an engaging presentation on their thesis topic, its originality and its significance.

In the UK, the 3MT national competition final is hosted by Vitae. Individual UK universities run their own competitions, to put forward one winner per participating Institution. The University of Birmingham is one of the Institutions participating in the 3MT competition. Participating in the Three Minute Thesis competition enhances your presentation skills and communicating research to a non-specialist audience.

Postgraduate Researcher Awards

At Birmingham we recognise the great contribution our postgraduate researchers and their supervisors make to the academic life at the University. Every year we recognise this contribution and present awards in a number of categories, including the prestigious Michael K. O'Rourke prize for best PhD publication, which recognises outstanding publications by University of Birmingham PhD researchers.

The Awards for Excellence in Doctoral Research Supervision recognise the important role that supervisors have in helping a PhD researcher to completion.

Your wellbeing matters

Postgraduate research is exciting and rewarding — but it can also be intense. That’s why we embed wellbeing support throughout your journey.

You’ll have access to:

  • Mental Health Services and Counselling
  • Researcher Wellbeing Workshops (resilience, stress management, imposter syndrome)
  • Peer Support Networks and Mentoring
