Our programme develops the foundations of artificial intelligence for big data, whilst delivering the professional skills required in the engineering industry and application within autonomous vehicles, healthcare and audio and image processing.
The 1 year full-time advanced course, comprises 180 credits. In the first two semesters, you will study six modules (120 credits). Your research project (60 credits) is carried out in the summer.
In this term, you will study Neural Networks and AI in order to understand how to apply them in applications. Delivered by the School of Computer Science, topics include the construction of neural networks and the algorithms required to prepare data sets for training Machine Learning and AI models. In addition the School of Engineering will deliver teaching on ethics, sustainability and related professional skills.
In this term, you will study three compulsory modules (60 credits) focused on applications in autonomous vehicles, healthcare applications as well as audio and image processing applications . At the beginning of this semester, you will get a chance to select your summer research project title. Teaching is delivered predominantly through lectures, tutorials, and labs, with assessment provided using a comprehensive mix of coursework and examination.
The summer is dedicated to your research project. You'll work closely with an academic supervisor on a live research project. This could be experimental and lab-based, theoretical and literature based, involve modelling, or be a mixture of all three elements.
This project will be concluded by the end of August, with marks delivered in September.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the future of engineering. Our unique interdisciplinary programme brings together expertise from the Schools of Engineering and Computer Science, giving you the opportunity to develop advanced AI knowledge alongside an understanding of its real-world engineering applications. You'll gain practical experience in emerging technologies, explore challenges facing modern industry and complete an individual research project tackling a live engineering problem.
Jointly delivered by the Schools of Engineering and Computer Science, through lectures, tutorials, workshops and project-based learning, you'll develop advanced AI and engineering expertise before undertaking an independent research project.
Assessment combines rigorous technical and managerial evaluation. Modules are assessed through unseen written examinations, technical essays, individual and group research project reports, oral presentations.
You will receive structured, timely feedback on all coursework and project submissions, designed to support continuous improvement. Feedback is provided through written comments, marking rubrics, and, where appropriate, verbal feedback following presentations or examinations, enabling reflection and development across both technical and managerial competencies.
As a postgraduate programme, significant independent study is expected. In addition to scheduled teaching, you will undertake substantial self-directed learning, including reading, research, project development, case preparation, and assignment work, typically forming the majority of your total study time.
You will be assigned a Personal Tutor within the School of Engineering who will provide academic guidance, pastoral support, and professional development advice throughout your studies, supporting your progression and career planning.
This course comprises 180 credits. In your first two terms you'll study the compulsory modules (120 credits). Once your taught modules are completed, you'll work on a research project (60 credits) over the summer period.
