This is a part-time, distance-learning programme, taking 3 years to complete for the MSc. You study from your home location, whilst continuing to work in a project-related role.
Live 2-day workshops take place in Birmingham between years 1-2 and 2-3, and students can participate in-person or remotely.
Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma will take 1 year or 2 years respectively to complete part-time.
In Year 1, you'll learn project management fundamentals, covering the topics you'll find in the professional bodies of knowledge, from a business-driven and critical perspective. We also cover pre-execution project development and planning activities and the importance of self-awareness and team leadership.

We teach working project leaders the skills to deliver reliable and efficient industrial projects and programmes. The course is delivered through an online platform. You will have the flexibility to watch a range of video recordings and to read through written materials.

Module information
You will complete a total of 120 credits of taught material in year 1 and 2, through six -four-month modules each worth 20 credits. Year 3 involves a single 60 credit research project. You may choose to complete one year (for a Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management), two years (for a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management) or a full three-year MSc course.

Entry requirements
To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
- Also at least 3 years of experience working
in a project environment and a good academic standard of education
- To have at least 3 years of experience working in a project environment. To get the best out of this course you need to be able to relate your academic learning and research to the real-life of projects.
- If you are not currently working in a project-related environment, please ensure your personal statement discusses how you'll be able to relate your studies to the real life of projects, and how you'll network with other project professionals as part of your learning.
- On very rare occasions we will consider applicants with less experience or no current project position, but the applicant will need to make a strong case in their Personal Statement, and at any subsequent interview.
- Your references should be professional rather than academic, coming from someone who has worked with you - ideally in a project environment. We require at least one, ideally two. If you are a non-native English speaker, the reference should (where applicable) refer to how much you worked in English, and how well you did so.
- A good academic standard of education. A good first degree is ideal, though we will consider applicants without a degree where they can demonstrate work experience at a reasonable senior level.
English language requirements
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.
For this course we require IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band, which is equivalent to:
- TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 Listening, 21 Speaking and 19 in Writing
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
- Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component
- LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 25 in each skill

Improve your knowledge of spoken and written English in preparation for studying at Birmingham with our pre-sessional English courses. If you have a conditional offer, you can take one of these courses as an alternative to retaking IELTS or other similar qualifications.

The total course fee is paid in three annual instalments of one-third of the total course fee. These are invoiced at commencement, and on the first and second anniversary of your course start date.
Please note that fees are the same for UK and non-UK residents alike. We are committed to providing accessible education pathways, and this fee structure enables international students to more easily access our research-informed, employability-driven courses.
This course does NOT follow the general University policy which requires a deposit from international students who accept an offer of a place. No deposit is required.

Postgraduate Masters Loan
To help with the cost of studies, this loan is available to all UK students. You can use this loan towards fees, maintenance or other costs at your own discretion. It’s available for all full-time, part-time and distance learning Masters programmes, as long as you don’t already have a Masters qualification (or equivalent).If you’re a student from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can apply for Masters loans from your country’s government.

We want to welcome the brightest talent to our postgraduate community. That’s why our Birmingham Masters Scholarships award £3,000 to more than 300 students each year.
Application process
To apply for a postgraduate programme, you will need to submit your application and supporting documents online.
Applications are accepted up to 2 weeks before the course commences. However, if you apply less than 2 months before the course start date, we ask that you contact the course admissions tutor in addition to submitting your online application.
In special cases we can consider later applications, including after the course has started. The part-time and online nature of the course facilitates this if you are able to put in the extra time to catch up to the rest of the cohort. If you meet the minimum entry requirements you will be invited to a video interview. This will be an informal discussion with opportunity for you to understand the programme and ensure it meets yourneeds and aspirations.
