For example, health care, climate change.
And data science is also a key tool in artificial intelligence.
The techniques of data science allow these artificial intelligence systems to learn from the huge data sets that we feed into them but also allows it to answer the questions that we pose to our AI agents.
In this programme, you will be studying various data science techniques.
You'll be studying some programming in Python and in R that will allow you to implement these techniques.
You'll also study some statistical theory and some mathematical theory that helps you understand why these techniques work and why they're so powerful.
There are some key features of our programme.
First of all, it's taught entirely in China at our Joint Institute with Jinan University, based in Guangzhou.
It's taught entirely in English, and it's taught by leading experts, both from Jinan University and from the University of Birmingham.
We will assess you and your learning in a number of ways.
Obviously, there will be traditional exams at the end of each semester.
You will have group projects, programming projects, and at the end of the programme, there's a large master’s project which will be assessed through a project report and an oral examination.

The Jinan University - University of Birmingham Joint Institute in Guangzhou is one of the leading Sino-UK joint institutes. You will join a thriving student community at JNU’s Panyu Campus. You will be taught entirely in English by experts in statistics and data science from both universities, with colleagues from the University flying out from Birmingham to teach you in person.
In your fourth semester you will work on a research project that will allow you to put what you have learnt into practice, producing a report that will showcase your skills as a statistical data scientist.
The programme will be assessed using a variety of methods including: unseen examinations, programming tasks, problem solving exercises, oral presentations, and independent projects.
Feedback will be provided on work submission for both formative and summative assessments, feedback may be shared, individual, written or oral.
We expect you to continue your learning outside of timetabled sessions, For each 10 module credit at Birmingham, we would anticipate you will need to undertake around 65 to 75 hours of self-study.
This programme is delivered by both University of Birmingham and Jinan University at the Joint Institute in Guangzhou, China.
This is a 2 year full-time programme comprising of taught modules during Year 1 followed your project in Year 2 alongside some additional taught modules.The project is completed under the direction of a project supervisor which will give you the opportunity to work one-to-one with a leading expert in their field.

As well as meeting the China requirements, to gain a place on this programme you will need to meet our general entry requirements plus those specific to this course. This programme is open to applicants from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
