This Neurogenetics MRes takes a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding brain function. You'll explore the genetic foundations of brain function and the future of neurogenetics.
Emerging from cutting-edge molecular-genetic technologies, neurogenetics is driving new discoveries of the mechanisms shaping brain structure and function at multiple scales from molecules to cells, neural circuits, behaviour and disease.
On this MRes, you'll explore neurogenetic approaches, the discoveries they are enabling. You'll also undertake an independent neurogenetics research project within Birmingham's Centre for Neurogenetics.
This course will run over 12 months, full-time. While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each term. This is based on a full time Masters course.
In the first term, you'll undertake two taught modules to ensure that you have a basic grounding in all aspects of the field and to introduce the topics and research questions on which your projects are to be based.
In the second term, after consulting with potential supervisors you'll select an eight-month, laboratory-based research project. You'll then become part of a leading research group to carry out your focused research project.
In the third term you'll continue to work on your laboratory-based research project.
