Meet Diljit

My name is Diljit and I am studying Automotive Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.

What is your favourite thing about your course?

My favourite thing about my course is the amount that I can get hands-on. There are a lot of aspects of it that you can be creative with and I like the modules on my course, where I can work in a team and develop ideas.

A friend who's never visited Birmingham before comes to stay with you - what would you do with them to get a taste of the city?

The city of Birmingham is very vibrant and bustling with people that come in from all over England. There are lots of landmarks from the Industrial Revolution to see and a lot of major companies which are based here like National Express. We would go to Bullring, a large mall with loads of clothes and food shops, to a night out on Broad Street. There are also many parks and green areas to see that are being developed to make Birmingham a sustainable city. There's a lot of activities like going for a boat ride in the canals and Cadbury World is not too far from the city centre.

When did you know the University of Birmingham was the place for you?

I knew the University of Birmingham was right for me when I visited it on Open Day. The campus was beautiful and not too far from home. I also liked the looks of the modules on my course and the support that's available. The engineering facilities are also great, which would benefit me in my course.

What are some highlights of your time at Birmingham?

I've been involved in a few societies during my first year. I was part of the Powerlifting Society, where we would meet and lift, coached by a GB Olympic powerlifter. I was also part of the Harry Potter Society, which was a good Thursday evening activity to relax at. The Photography society was also good, going to interesting locations and sharing ideas and helping each other.

Where is your favourite place on campus?

My favourite place on campus is the Main Library. There are loads of resources in there, with a cafe and more communal working area on the ground floor and quieter spaces as you go further up. There are rooms that you can book if you're working with other people and good quality areas to work in.

Do you have any top tips for prospective Birmingham students?

My top tips for prospective Birmingham students are to visit on an open day so you can get a feel for the campus and the facilities, stay organised and on top of everything, and make sure you take any opportunity with webinars or in-person days that you can come to.

What do you want to do after graduating?

After graduating I'm not sure what I want to do, but I would like to travel and then find a career. Having a degree will let me explore more options and doing things through the university, such as being a Birmingham Scholar, will improve my chances with potential employers.
