At the University of Birmingham's Clinical Immunology Services, we offer comprehensive testing and educational resources related to autoimmune neurological disorders. Our work covers both paraneoplastic and non-paraneoplastic neurological antibodies, essential for diagnosing and managing a range of immune-mediated neurological conditions.

In addition to antibody testing, we provide detailed analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for the detection of oligoclonal bands (OCBs), a gold standard in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, offering high sensitivity and specificity. This integrated service includes sample handling protocols, testing methodologies, and interpretation guidance to support accurate and timely clinical decision-making.

  • Paraneoplastic Neurological Antibodies

Learn more about the rare phenomenon, Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndrome (PNS), and understand its link between tumours, the immune system and its neurological symptoms.

    Find out more about PNS
  • Non-Paraneoplastic Antibodies

Learn more about this group of antigens that are directly accessible to circulating antibodies (considered pathogenic) due to their extracellular location and are responsive to treatment.

    Find out more about non-PNS
  • Samples, Method & OCBs

Discover how our cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) testing supports the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis through the identification of oligoclonal bands (OCBs) — a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic marker. We provide comprehensive guidance on sample requirements, testing procedures, and interpretation to ensure reliable results that aid clinical decision-making.
