The course will support you to develop the skills required to tackle health challenges and reduce inequalities across diverse cultural and geographic contexts, through engagement with world leading research and global health experts.

This course can be studied full-time, part-time, or for up to five years in a flexible learning pattern. International students can only study this course full-time. Teaching is divided into three module groups consisting of core global health modules, research methods for global health, and optional modules related to global health. MSc students will also conduct a dissertation project.
Term one begins with a non-assessed introductory week, providing you with the key information needed to thrive when studying Global Health at University of Birmingham.
The first core module, Fundamentals of Global Health will ensure you have a firm grasp of key concepts in global and population health, and research methods. Further Global Health builds on Fundamentals of Global Health and focusses on applying theoretical global health concepts into practice across many different contexts.
Further optional modules in term one will include a detailed understanding of health inequalities, health improvement, and applied health research methods and biostatistics.
Term two provides insights into health system policy, planning, and programming in global health contexts. There are further optional modules in aspects of global health (health protection, disability and development, urbanity and wellbeing), and research methods commonly used in global health (systematic reviews and evidence synthesis, mixed methods research, qualitative research methods).
The focus of term three and the summer period for those on the MSc is the dissertation project. This is a significant piece of work undertaken with the support and advice of active researchers and academics, giving you insight and experience of undertaking high quality research on a global health issue. You will be required to submit a dissertation report and present your work orally and in the style of a conference poster.

Masters students will complete 120 credits of taught modules and will undertake a 60-credit dissertation. There are 60 credits of core Global Health Modules, 20 credits of core research methods training, and the remainder are optional modules. Postgraduate Diploma students will complete 120 credits of taught modules and Postgraduate Certificate students will complete 60 credits of taught modules.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
You should have or expect to obtain a 2:1 undergraduate Honours degree or higher (or equivalent qualifications) in a subject relevant to global health, including but not limited to health, life and biological sciences, medicine, dental and pharmacy qualification, and other degrees relevant to the practice of global health (e.g. social sciences, human geography).
From 2027/28 entry, applications are also welcome from UK medical students wishing to intercalate.
Relevant work experience or compelling rationale for enrolling are considered for lower degrees and where degrees are less relevant than examples above.

If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.

If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
The University tuition fee covers the cost of your tuition, supervision, assessment and includes membership to the Guild of Students.
