This course will run over 12 months in a full-time mode. There is also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis for Home students.
In the first semester, you'll take three 20-credit core modules to build a strong foundation. These cover data science technique such as supervised learning and data mining, ethical and policy challenges of AI, and programming skills for solving real-world problems. You'll also choose one 20-credit optional module from our AI, Policy, and Government module list. Assessment includes group work, exams, and assignments throughout the semester.
In the second semester, you'll take two 20-credit core modules. The first, AI for Government and Policy, focuses on applying machine learning to real-world public sector challenges while considering ethical AI use. The second, Current Topics in Data Science, keeps you up to date with the latest developments through seminars, presentations, and quizzes on recent advancements, helping you deepen your expertise.
During this term, you will be completing assignments and focusing on your 60-credit research dissertation project.

Our MSc in AI and Government combines computer science and political science to address AI's impact on governance. You'll gain hands-on experience with real-world datasets, learn ethical AI practices, and explore global and local policy challenges. With a cutting-edge curriculum and expert faculty, you'll graduate ready for impactful roles in government, policy, and technology.
This Masters programme is for those who want to apply AI in government and policy contexts, rather than building algorithms or pursuing more technical-based computer science programmes.
Teaching will utilise a range of learning methods, including lectures, workshops and seminars as well as blended learning support.
The programme is composed of six 20-credit core modules completed by 20 credits to choose across a range of optional International Development modules. To complete this and graduate with the 180 credits that will award you the MSc, you will have to undertake a 60-credit dissertation project.

While a background in mathematics is not required, we recognise that some students may wish to strengthen these skills. To support this, we offer a free online course providing comprehensive maths and data literacy preparation to help you succeed.

If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.

To help with the cost of studies, this loan is available to all UK students. You can use this loan towards fees, maintenance or other costs at your own discretion. It’s available for all full-time, part-time and distance learning Masters programmes, as long as you don’t already have a Masters qualification (or equivalent).If you’re a student from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can apply for Masters loans from your country’s government.

Application Fee
For international applicants this programme is subject to a £50 non-refundable application fee. At the end of the application form, before you can submit it to us, you will be required to pay, or indicate how you will pay the required fee in order for us to process your application.
