My research focuses on the development of a low-energy alternative, Confined Impining Jet Mixers (CIJMs), to traditional emulsification techniques. In CIMs, by head-on impining of two jets within a confined environment, high levels of energy dissipations drive emulsion formation at lower energy expenses than traditional homogenisers. CIMs offer the advantage of a low-energy and high-efficiency approach to emulsification by still maintaining high-throughputs, which are relevant from an industrial point of view. Besides process aspects, the project also investigates the effect of varying formulation parameters (such as the choice of the amount and quality of dispersed phase as well as of the emulsifier) on the final emulsion microstructure.
