PhD Student in Physics and Astromony
Matt is one of our former BEAR Champions and is no longer at the University of Birmingham.
What is your Academic background and current research field?
I am a PhD student at the Institute for Gravitational Wave Astronomy in the School of Physics of Astronomy. Before that, I completed an integrated Masters degree in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Warwick. My work focuses on the astrophysics of black holes in binary systems and the invisible emission they produce called gravitational waves.
Which BEAR Services have been most helpful to you in your research?
Essential for me are BlueBEAR and the Research Data Store (RDS). On BlueBEAR I use both the standard and GPU compute nodes to do lots of interesting Physics and then store all the large outputs, as well as open data from scientific collaborations, on the RDS.
How widespread do you think BEAR Services are known in your School and how do you plan to spread the word?
Many others are also using BlueBEAR and the RDS to run their compute jobs, but BEAR's other services and training sessions I think are less well known. I'll advertise the BEAR services in our group meetings. For example, we have a PhD code review club where we have recently discussed submitting jobs and using virtual environments on BlueBEAR.

What's an interesting fact about you?
When I'm not doing Physics I'm probably playing a guitar or out for a run (though not at the same time... yet). And I'm very much a cat person (sorry dog lovers).
