Genotyping and Phenotyping of Platelets

1header

We are a research group based in Birmingham and Sheffield and are working together to research patients who have problems with bleeding and may have a problem with their platelets.

Platelets are small circulating particles in the blood that help to form a clot (blood sticking together) when we cut ourselves or experience an injury. We are trying to investigate whether some individuals who bleed more than usual have problems with their platelets and would eventually like to look at the changes in their genetic code (DNA) that cause these problems.

Our group have already discovered several new platelet problems in patients who we have recruited into our study. To enter our study you need to have been seen and assessed by a haematology doctor in one of the hospitals who we work with, which are shown on the map and listed below:

In October 2012 GAPP was selected as “study of the month” for the National Institute of Health Research Specialty Groups newsletter. This is fantastic news and reflects the hard work that all the members of the GAPP team have put into the study.
