Health Data Immersion Week:
Working with Real-World Data - 27th-31st March 2023

Delivered in partnership between the University of Birmingham's Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Science and AI and Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), and in collaboration with the PIONEER Data Hub, the Working with Real-World Data course was part of a series intended to enable graduates with advanced skills in mathematics and computational science to gain insight into key topics in health data science.

The HDR UK supported PIONEER Data Hub improves patient care by making routinely-collected health data available to doctors, researchers and academics, under licence. With robust governance and ethics in place, this data can then be used to develop new methods of predicting, diagnosing and monitoring illness in hospital and at home; improving treatment choice and identifying new ways of delivering clinical care.

Combining guided practicals and lectures from experts in health, data, research and governance, this course gave participants from across the UK an insight into the potential and challenges of real-world health data, and practical experience of working with this data.

It highlighted the significant data engineering efforts that underlie the provision of research-ready data and the use of a modern secure computing environment that is the emerging standard for accessing UK health data. Via PIONEER’S Trusted Research Environment, participants had access to an EHR Synthetic data set developed specifically for this programme and configured to offer a snapshot of clinical practice.

Saheed Adeyanju, Immersion Week Participant

“Last week, I had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Real-World Health Data Immersion Week which brought together health data enthusiasts and healthcare professionals to explore essential aspects of health data governance, compliance, analytics and data warehousing in real-world contexts. Set against the backdrop of the prestigious University of Birmingham, we engaged in interactive workshops and insightful presentations, delving into the complexities of healthcare data management. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, which broadened my perspective on working with real-world health data and its crucial role in advancing healthcare. A big thank you to the organizers, speakers, and fellow attendees for making this event an unforgettable learning experience!”
