University Industry Relationships and Spillover Effects

In this project, we attempt to increase our understanding of university knowledge commercialisation pathways building on existing research in the subject.

In recent years, the role of universities as “anchor institution” has increased in attention. In particular, their role of acting as “connective anchors” working with different local stakeholders has become vital in many local environments. In this context, universities have increased their interest in getting a better understanding of the potential application, exploitation and final use of their knowledge by the private sector and in the context of universities’ civic responsibilities with the financial fallout of Brexit and the COVID19 crisis.

Identify the mechanisms and pathways, as well as the challenges and obstacles supporting these highly diverse relationships, is key to ensure their development and continuity.

Firms and Industrial Demography

Objectives

In this project, we take a mix-methods approach, to extend our understanding of university knowledge commercialisation pathways building on existing research in the subject. In particular, our project aims at:

  1. Developing a typology of prototypical university-industry relationships,
  2. Analysing their relationship to and dependency of the regional context, sectors and disciplines in which they occur,
  3. Identify new institutional level pathways with significant yet underused potentials for the economy.
