Universities as Anchor Institutions

Universities can play a role as an Anchor Institution where its research and teaching activities are ‎viewed through the priorities of both the university and the surrounding communities.

The project ‎aims to enable understanding of the role of universities as anchor institutions in ‎fostering ‎economic well-being and social cohesion. This aim can be realised through understanding key ‎economic and social forces that universities ‎can address for local and regional development ‎including key challenges and ‎opportunities. ‎

In addition, anchor institutions can play a crucial role ‎when collaborating within a network of other anchor institutions for example, higher education ‎and medical institutions commonly known as “Eds & Meds”, can form powerful collaborations and ‎define strategies with other institutions to address issues such inequality, through ‎upskilling and ‎‎employment of vulnerable groups from disadvantaged ‎communities.

This project is timely as it ‎looks at the universities’ resilience, proactive response to shock events (for example: COVID-19) ‎and impact of ‎investments on the university environment for ‎improving health ‎and well-being. ‎

Finally, this project seeks to understand the role of universities in place-making through social, ‎cultural ‎and economic infrastructure investments and its impact in creating ‎opportunities in cities.‎
