University is a time for growth and self-discovery and, depending on your course, you might find that you have some free time outside of your studying and lectures.
Many students choose to fill this time by joining a club or society, and there are over 500 to choose from at Birmingham. From Acapella to Harry Potter, and Shakespeare to Match of the Day, whatever your interest there’s something here for you.
Eaad, from Birmingham, 2nd year Mathematics
“I am part of ArabSoc, SomaliSoc, MathsSoc and even MagicSoc, the university has so many societies to offer and it's a fantastic opportunity to meet new people!”
You don’t have to have been Kickboxing all your life to join the Kickboxing society, or have made extravagant cakes to join the Baking society! All you need is an interest and a passion (so for the Baking society, you just need a passion for eating cake!). There are also lots of volunteering opportunities and charities available to join through The Guild of Students, our students' union. And remember, if there’s not a club that interests you, you can always start your own.
Rumali, from Poole, 2nd year Political Science and International Relations
“The Guild is home to all of the societies at Birmingham, so it definitely plays a big role in terms of student life here. It is also the home of Fab and sports nights which are some of the highlights of the week."”
The Guild of Students' job is to help Birmingham students develop skills, have fun and make sure everyone gets the most out of their university experience.
Amber, from Pershore, 3rd year English
“I am part of Triathlon, Cool Runnings, Sailing and Skydiving clubs! It’s such a big part of my life, we have so many amazing sports teams and great facilities to do them in.”
Wednesday afternoons at Birmingham are dedicated to sports, with no lectures or seminars for undergraduate students. So even if you have a really busy schedule you should find some time to fit sports in. All of our sports teams accept beginners as well as those who’ve been playing for a long time, so if you’ve always wanted to try hockey or have been playing basketball all of your life, you’ll be welcomed to one of our sports teams.
