Birmingham is littered with independent pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants. Just a short walk from the student village of Selly Oak, lies the suburban village of Moseley.
Moseley’s independent scene is popular with creatives and students, and with monthly farmer’s and arts markets it’s easy to see why.
“Venture outside the city centre! I love the very understated pubs that have live music, such as the Spotted Dog in Digbeth and the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath”
Close enough to campus to pop to after a day of studying, and with a more relaxed vibe than the city centre, there are so many places to choose to spend an evening. The lively Prince of Wales pub has its own tiki bar and street food snacks, Damascena is a popular Syrian coffee shop and café, and the Michelin-starred Carters of Moseley is perfect for special occasions. For cocktails why not try out The Cuban Embassy, for tapas head to La Plancha, and as Moseley rests on the edge of the famous Balti Triangle there are plenty of fantastic Indian restaurants to choose from too.
If you like a challenge with your drinks, there are plenty of pub quizzes to choose from including One Trick Pony Club, where you can try your hand at the frustrating but excellent ‘tin foil challenge’. If you walk from campus to Moseley you’ll pass the Edgbaston Stadium (home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club and the Birmingham Bears), Cannon Hill Park and Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park; all of which are perfect for a day out, whether you have a free afternoon to go on a swan-shaped pedalo, or play a game of mini golf in Cannon Hill Park. You may even manage to get tickets to a test match at Edgbaston.
Nearby Kings Heath is home to The Hare & Hounds pub, which has a bit of everything – drinks, food, music and comedy nights, as well as more pub quizzes. You can also find excellent vegan brunch stops, and an array of charity shops and independent retailers where you’ll be sure to pick up a bargain.
