The city centre

Once the heart of the industrial revolution, Birmingham continues to be at the forefront of innovation and industry. Our city has a large and ever-growing number of young entrepreneurs and start-up businesses, and is also the chosen home of many financial and business services.

In 2022 the city will also host the Commonwealth Games, which will give the world a window into a city with students at its very heart.

Rumali, from Poole, Political Science with International Relations

“Birmingham is such a vibrant city, and you really do get the feeling that ‘there is something always happening’. Diversity was a thing that I lacked growing up, and I love how Birmingham has such a vibe of ‘everyone’s welcome’. This feeling is something that absolutely extends to the University as well”

Birmingham has a thriving independent scene and nowhere is this more apparent than the city centre. Independent Birmingham is a celebration of independent culture in the city and is a great place to start exploring everything that you can do here. As well as independents, you can also find all major high street retailers in the famous Bullring, and around the city centre. And whether you have a Nando’s craving or want brunch in an independent café, you’ll struggle to make a decision with the range of cafes and restaurants on offer.

The city centre isn’t all about shopping, business and restaurants. Down the redbrick side streets, or venturing down the canals, you can find a variety of hidden gems. Here are some of our students' favourites...

  • The Electric Cinema is such a hidden gem- it’s the oldest running cinema in the country! They serve drinks and homemade cakes there too! It’s so cute! – Beth, from Godstone, English
  • A place you might not know about is the Edwardian Tearooms in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery! It's a large and airy open space and is a great place for a coffee and catch up- and the museum is free entry too! – Carter, from Manchester, Mechanical Engineering
  • My favourite hidden gem in Birmingham is Lane7 bowling in the Mailbox! It’s like stepping out of a time machine and has an amazing vibe! They do student discount too!!! – Eaad, from Birmingham, Mathematics
  • I love walking along the canal especially near Gas Street and Brindleyplace, you can even walk there from campus! – Rachel, from Bury, Biological Sciences
