How to apply for Study Abroad programme

We welcome applications from study abroad (fee-paying) students from universities with/without an existing partnership with the University of Birmingham.

My university is a current partner of University of Birmingham

Step 1:

If you are student at one of our current partner institution, your international office / study abroad office will nominate you for our study abroad (fee-paying) programme at the University of Birmingham. Please contact your own study abroad office if you are unsure whether we are current partners or not. Please check step 5, if your university is not our current partner.

Step 2:

Once you have been nominated by your home institution, we will directly send you a link to our study abroad application form. 

Step 3:

Please check our Academic and English entry requirements for incoming study abroad students applying at the University of Birmingham for one semester or a full year. 

Step 4: 

Once you receive the application form, please register first and then proceed with submitting your application along with all the required documents. Please refer to our guide to completing the application for more details.

If your university in not a current partner with us, you can still apply for a study abroad (fee-paying) programme at the University of Birmingham.

Step 1:

Step 2: 

Please register here to have access to the application form. 

Step 3:

Log in to the application form and submit your application with all the required documents online. Please refer to our Guide to completing the application for more details. 

Above form is for Study abroad (fee paying) programmes only, NOT for an exchange programme (any exchange programme application using this link will NOT be considered).

Documents to be uploaded with your my application

To apply for a study abroad programme, you will need to upload:

  • A copy of an official Transcript of Records in English showing the courses taken and grades (signed and stamped)
  • A copy of your passport valid for the period of your exchange
  • English Language Proficiency (ELP) certificate (if applicable)

If you do not have the required level of English or would like to improve your English before the start of the academic year, you can take one of our pre-sessional English language courses. These courses are run by our Birmingham International Academy. Find out more about the details, costs, and application process for those courses. Deadline to apply for a study abroad programme

Please check the application deadlines and submit as soon as possible to secure your place. 

What happens next?

Once you have been made an offer of a place you will receive an offer letter. All of the information that you require prior to your arrival at the University will be sent to you electronically or it will be available online. You can also visit our preparing for Birmingham page which contains useful information for students starting at Birmingham.

All students who have had an offer will be sent full details of the orientation events by email. It is important that you check your emails regularly, as some of our events will be tailored individually for you.
