Course overview
This course introduces a range of root canal preparation systems, including both rotary and reciprocating techniques, where you'll gain exposure to various commercial suppliers to help evaluate and select appropriate tools for your own clinical practice.
A variety of obturation techniques will be practiced to align with evidence-based specialist approaches. The clinical option will additionally include hands-on clinical skills training and opportunities to work on new patient cases.

The Practical Aspects of Root Canal Therapy course includes revision lectures, tutorials, and hands-on practical sessions.
Course delivery
Residential Week: Tutorials are delivered online, with practical sessions held during an intensive residential week.
Practical sessions will focus on key topics, including vital pulp therapy and regenerative endodontic procedures, which you'll perform in clinical simulation settings. These sessions will cover the use of modern materials and current clinical guidelines.
Content
On completion, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate competency in techniques of accessing and preparing a root canal.
- Appraise the concept of tapers, canal complex anatomy and the systems available to help prepare root canals.
- Knowledge of different obturation techniques and decision making on choosing the right technique for each specific case.

Assessment
- Practical – 50%
- Unseen case – 25%
- Journal presentation – 25%
The practical will be undertaken over 3 hours and will include a reflection of the session. The unseen case will be undertaken over 15 minutes of exam with 15 minutes of preparation. The journal presentation will be 15 minutes with 10 minutes of questions.
