Masterclasses 2022

Challenge what you know

Students walk across campus

Our popular masterclass programme provides school students in Years 10-13 with fun, engaging and interactive insights into what it's like to study at a selective university.

Masterclasses are designed specifically for school and college students in Years 10-13. This year we have also introduced a new masterclass for Years 7-9. The sessions provide fun, engaging, interactive insights into a range of subject areas, and offer an opportunity to understand what it’s like to learn at a selective Russell Group university.

What will students gain?

Our expert academic colleagues lead sessions on a whole range of subjects and topics, from psychology to filmmaking to dentistry. Your pupils will take part in activities, workshops and lectures which will advance their understanding of a particular topic, invigorate their interest in the subject area and motivate them to pursue further study in the field.

Masterclasses programme

All masterclasses will take place on the University of Birmingham campus. Masterclasses last around two hours and will run on Wednesday afternoons 1.00pm - 3.00pm from Wednesday 2 March to Wednesday 6 April 2022*.

Please click on the subject tabs below for further details about the masterclasses we are offering in 2022.

*Subject to Government and University guidance around Covid-19.

How to request a place

For pre-16 classes, we accept school bookings only and teachers can request places for a group. For post-16 classes, we accept school bookings or bookings from individual Year 12 and 13 students.

Request group places as a teacher

Request a place as a student

Please note that completion of the form is not a confirmation of places. We will get in touch with you to confirm whether we are able to offer you place(s) on the masterclass(es) you have requested.

All schools/colleges are welcome to request masterclass places, however for the first two weeks of bookings, schools and colleges in the West Midlands with low levels of progression to higher education will receive priority places. The remaining places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you have a question about the masterclasses, please email masterclass@contacts.bham.ac.uk.

What happens if my Masterclass places are confirmed?

We will begin allocating masterclass places from the beginning of February. All masterclasses will take place on the University of Birmingham campus. If we are able to offer you places on a masterclass, we will email you to confirm the details including the location. We ask all attendees to make their own way to and from the location, where you will be met by a student ambassador and the staff member leading the class.
