  • Support for new Assistant Professors

If you join us as an Assistant Professor, you will be enrolled onto our Academic Development Programme (ADP). The ADP will support you in building a successful academic career through a flexible, phased approach to professional development, tailored to individual experience and career pathways. You will be expected to be promoted to Associate Professor, typically no later than your 5th or 6th year in post.

Support for development

We provide you with excellent support for teaching and research development, and with management and leadership development throughout your career at Birmingham.

All staff have access to a broad range of courses to support your growth and development.

Teaching support

Our Higher Education Futures institute (HEFi) has a mission to support staff to deliver innovative and inclusive research-intensive teaching with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses and conferences.

Research support

Academic researchers at the University of Birmingham have access to a wide range of support services to enable them to take their research one step further. Get support from original idea to working with business and industry.  Get expert advice on funding opportunities, compliance, governance, and much, much, more.

Networking

We support our early career staff through two network groups and our Early Career Academy.  We also have staff-led networks; an enabling staff network, a parent and carers network, a race equality network, and a rainbow network.

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)

We hold institutional bronze awards for Athena SWAN and the Race Equality Charter, and we have a comprehensive Equality Change Programme.

Equality, diversity and inclusion has been part of our core since our foundation in 1900. Then, we committed to accept women and people of all religious backgrounds as equal members of the University.  Today, we have a clear EDI strategy to make the University an even better place for everybody.

We're family friendly

We support flexible and hybrid working, and offer enhanced maternity, parental, and adoption leave and have a number of award winning workplace nurseries on site.

On return from maternity leave, we support academic staff who wish can drop either teaching or research for a term in order to re-establish themselves in the workplace.

Responsible use of Research Metrics

Applicants for academic roles should take account of the University’s commitment to DORA.
