The news in brief

Throughout January and February, the School of Social Policy has been busy. 

• In the journal Child Abuse Review, HSMC's Dr Sophie King-Hill discusses her realistic evaluation of a sexual behaviours assessment tool and training implemented across a southern locality. 
• IRiS's Professor Jenny Phillimore and SPSC's Dr Kelly Hall have published an article in The Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies: Migration uncertainty in the context of of Brexit: resource conservation tactics.
• Sandra Pertek, the SEREDA Researcher at IRiS, University of Birmingham, has been awarded U21 Seed Funding to continue her research on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and modern slavery.
• HSMC's  Dr Iestyn Williams and colleagues have published a new article in the BMJ Global Health: Priority setting during the Covid-19 pandemic: beyond vaccines.
  
• SPSC's Dr Kelly Hall appeared on BBC Radio 4's Moneybox show to talk about expats and the trade agreement.
• IRiS's Dr Sian Thomas has written a chapter in the book Understanding Gender Based Violence: An Essential Textbook for Nurses, Healthcare Professionals and Social Workers.
• SWSC's Professor Jon Glasby, Professor Robin Miller and Dr Rebecca Ince have begun a new NIHR study on why people with learning disabilities get stuck in hospital for long periods of time.
• The Journal of Social Policy and Justice has announced that SPSC's Dr Kayleigh Garthwaite had one of 2020's most downloaded articles: ‘The do-gooders and scroungers’: examining narratives of foodbank use in online local press coverage in the West Midlands, UK.
• Professor Nando Sigona, Director of IRiS, has commenced the Rebordering Britain and Britons after Brexit (MIGZEN) project under the ESRC’s Governance after Brexit (GAB) programme.  
• HSMC Professors Mark Exworthy and Russell Mannion have won a prestigious Emerald Literarti Award in the category of “Highly Commended Paper” for their article Repositioning the boundaries between public and private healthcare providers in the English NHS.
• SPSC doctoral student Chloe Alexander has published a paper in Social Policy and Administration: Affects of policy design: The case of young carers in the Care Act 2014 and the Children and Families Act 2014.
• BA Social Work student Omar Mohamed has published a blog on Social Work England: Improving social work's engagement with LGBTQ+ people and issues.
• HSMC's Professor Judith Smith and SWSC's Professor Robin Millar have published a new UoB blog: The NHS White Paper: evolution or revolution?
• MA Migration Studies student Hannah Kent has published an IRiS blog on analysing the Migration Studies 2019 journal issues.
