The Advanced Engineering Management Programme (AEMP) is delivered jointly by the School of Engineering and the Birmingham Business School, combining the expertise and strengths of both schools to offer a high quality, distinctive and flexible course.

The programme introduces core management concepts in semester one before you select a specialist pathways in semester two.

In this pathway you can expect to be exposed throughout the year to up-to-date knowledge of current and future trends within Operations Management while developing the skills of critical evaluation and analysis that you will need as an engineer of tomorrow.

You also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to your requirements.

  • Study in our new state-of-the-art School of Engineering building which includes a 179-capacity Design Centre and 160 drop-in study spaces throughout the building providing flexible learning.

This degree programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council, as meeting the academic requirement for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Postgraduate Loans (PGL) for Masters students

UK and EU students (with settled or pre-settled status) looking to pursue a Masters programme in the UK can apply for a non-means-tested loan from the British government via the Student Loans Company (SLC).

The loan will be paid directly to you, into a UK bank account. It is intended to provide a contribution towards the costs of Masters study and whether the loan is used towards fees, maintenance or other costs is at your own discretion.

University scholarships

Birmingham Masters Scholarship

Our Birmingham Masters Scholarship offers £2,000 via a tuition fee discount, to support the brightest and best applicants from UK or Ireland undertaking Masters study at Birmingham during 2024-2025.

Global Masters Scholarship

This £2,000 Gloabl Masters Scholarship award is available to all international students from a selection of countries who are seeking to study a taught Masters degree at Birmingham in the 2024-25 academic year.

Application Fee

For international applicants this programme is subject to a £50 non-refundable application fee. At the end of the application form, before you can submit it to us, you will be required to pay, or indicate how you will pay the required fee in order for us to process your application. Please complete and submit your application before paying your application fee.

UK and non-Tier 4 applicants

Applications will close 31 August 2024. We will close applications as soon as the programme is full, early applications are encouraged.

International applicants requiring visas

Applications to this programme from students who are international for fees will close 7 May 2024. We will close applications as soon as the programme is full, early applications are encouraged.

Our Standard Requirements

A 2:1 Honours degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Maths or Technology based subjects from a recognised institution. Applicants with a 2:2 Honours degree in the above disciplines alongside relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

International Requirements



International Students

English language

For students whose first language is not English, one of the following English language qualifications is required:

 
  • IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band
  • TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking and 21 in Writing
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) including online: PTE Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills
  • Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component

Course overview

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management. 

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links. 

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

You can expect to be exposed throughout to up-to-date knowledge of current and future trends in the management of your chosen field whilst developing the skills of critical evaluation and analysis that you will need as an engineer of tomorrow. We look forward to welcoming you.

Study part-time

The Advanced Engineering Management Programmes can be studied on a part-time basis over the duration of up to five years. Modules will be studied over a two-week period, therefore you can undertake one module per term or complete more if you would like to finish the course sooner. Module dates and times are yet to be confirmed, but if you have any queries about studying part-time you can contact pg-admissions-eng@contacts.bham.ac.uk.
