The Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Science and AI is a nexus for collaborative research and education at the University of Birmingham.
Working across all five Colleges, the Institute is developing and fostering a culture of continuous interaction to address important challenges in areas including sustainability, equality, health, and data-driven science. We are building on a foundation of excellence in methodology including modelling, statistics, machine learning, linguistics, optimisation, behavioural sciences, and the social, ethical, and legal implications of technology.
The University is one of 13 partners in the Alan Turing Institute, established in 2015 as the national Institute for Data Science and AI, and is working in close collaboration to deliver world leading collaborative research across the Turing’s scientific programmes through our Turing Fellows. We are working with the Turing and our other strategic partners, the Rosalind Franklin Institute and Diamond Light Source to deliver Baskerville, a state-of-the-art high performance computing resource for modelling and data analysis funded by EPSRC. With the Turing and Health Data Research UK, we are delivering a national PhD Programme in Health Data Science, funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The Institute also acts as a focal point for knowledge exchange, extending our reach and influence beyond the University to our partners in industry, the NHS and government.
We are developing an exciting and innovative programme of education activities to ensure that every student can study data science and AI. These will join the University’s range of Masters programmes in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and Responsible Data Science. We are delighted to be able to support funded scholarships for students from underrepresented communities, thanks to funding from the Office for Students, and a generous donation from Deepmind.
