A key deliverable for MANIFEST is to generate three researcher workshops in order to (i) build on discussions from the project kick off meeting, (ii) develop a more detailed research agenda to help address key research questions and (iii) develop a coherent work programme. This workshop is centred on WP1 (characterization and processing of materials), the interdependencies with WP2 (Multiscale modelling) and WP3 (Grid-scale integration). However, we encourage those researchers with an interest in any of these work packages to attend, as cross-work package collaboration is an integral theme of MANIFEST.

Building on the discussion at the kick-off meeting, the objective of the workshop is to describe a more detailed research agenda to help address these questions, for both electrochemical and thermal energy storage materials, using expertise and facilities across the institutions.

Two key research questions for the workshop are:

  1. Can control of nano/micro/macro-structure significantly enhance the performance and lifetime of energy storage devices?
  2. How do we predict the behaviour of a storage device based on storage materials properties, and the system level performance based on device level behaviour?

Some of the issues which emerged from the kick-off meeting were:

  • Degradation – how are materials changing over time and use? Setting up characterisation for this. How can this information then feed back into materials processing.
  • What are the current materials fabrication processes used within the consortium and how can we improve on these to achieve desired materials structures?
  • Linking electrochemical and thermal areas (possibly through degradation)
  • Larger systems – how can WP3 and WP1 work together to create benchmarks for materials and devices to work at a bigger/grid scale?
  • Facilities – what facilities can be used across the consortium from WP1?
  • Modelling – how can outputs from degradation (chemical, morphological and structural) inform modelling work in WP2, which can in turn inform WP3?
  • How can characterisation and development of composite materials with good thermal properties inform WP2 and WP3?
