University of Birmingham academic named in Best Young British Novelist list
Dr Anna Metcalfe, senior lecturer in Creative Writing, has been listed as one of the best young novelists in Britain by Granta magazine.

Dr Bohdan Piasecki wins inaugural poetry prize with ‘electric’ performance
University of Birmingham Assistant Professor Piasecki has won the first performance poetry award in one of the UK’s most prestigious poetry competitions.

Creative writing academics contribute to ‘protest zine’ against cuts to Birmingham libraries
Luke Kennard, Anna Metcalfe and Bohdan Piasecki wrote poems and a microplay for a new collection of works celebrating Birmingham’s 35 branch libraries.
Our alumni novelists

Beth O'Brien studied MA Creative Writing at Birmingham and studied a PhD at the University which explored disability in fairy tales.
Her debut novel, Wolf Siren, reimagines Little Red Riding Hood and was published in 2025. She began writing the novel for one of the MA assignments.
Other published graduates from the School of English, Drama and Creative Studies include:
- Katie Lowe, author of The Furies, who studied an MPhil in Literature.
- Elizabeth O'Connor, author of Whale Fall, who studied a PhD in English Literature. Elizabeth was named in The Guardian's list of Top 10 novelists of the year in 2024.
