Our alumni novelists

Beth O'Brien studied MA Creative Writing at Birmingham, and is currently studying a PhD at the University which explores disability in fairy tales. 

Her debut novel, Wolf Siren, reimagines Little Red Riding Hood and was published in 2025. She began writing the novel for one of the MA assignments, using the MA to pursue writing fiction. 

Other published graduates from the School of English, Drama and Creative Studies include:

  • Katie Lowe, author of The Furies, who studied an MPhil in Literature.
  • Elizabeth O'Connor, author of Whale Fall, who studied a PhD in English Literature. Elizabeth was named in The Guardian's list of Top 10 novelists of the year in 2024.
