The curriculum takes an integrated approach, blending concepts from management with engineering principles. With the help of this integrated curriculum, students can acquire a wide range of skills that will prepare them for leadership positions including both management and technical roles.
Course Structure
This 1 year full-time programme teaches research-led operations management skills that are sought after in both the civil engineering and building industries. The course can also be taken over 2-3 years part-time.
In term one you'll develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School, the management content is based on real-world examples, drawing on the expertise and reputation of the Business School to deliver a high quality experience. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

Jointly delivered by the School of Engineering and Birmingham Business School, you'll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops before undertaking a research project in the summer term.

Module information
This programme is a 1 year full time taught masters degree (180 credits) consisting of 120 credits of taught modules and a 60 credit research project.

Entry requirements
To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
- 2:1 Honours Degree
in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Maths or Technology based subjects from a recognised institution.
Applicants with a 2:2 Honours Degree in the above disciplines alongside relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
English language requirements
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.
For this course we require IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, which is equivalent to:
- TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 Listening, 22 Speaking and 21 in Writing
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills
- Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component
- LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 33 in each skill
