- Professor Jenny Phillimore has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Gothenburg in recognition of her ‘unique and multifaceted contribution to research on migration, integration and diversity, and for the dissemination of knowledge about innovative collaborative research and analysis methods of great relevance for social science research in increasingly complex societies.’
- Dr Jason Schaub and Professor Paul Montgomery have launched The LGBTQ+ Young People in Social Care project.
- Professor Jon Glasby has been appointed Director of the new IMPACT Centre (Improving Adult Care Together), which aims to put evidence into practice to promote and maintain people’s independence and wellbeing. The Centre will receive funding of £15 million over the next six years, with equal contributions from ESRC and the Health Foundation.
- The Third Sector Research Centre and partners have been exploring community responses to COVID-19. Initial research findings, ‘Stronger than anyone thought’ were published in September 2020, and a further report on how communities have sustained initial responses will be published in May 2021. These reports have been accompanied by a series of 12 Rapid Research Briefings and a series of nine short videos is also available on YouTube.
- HSMC Senior Fellow Steve Gulati has blogged on diversity and the importance of fair recruitment.
- The Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management (CHASM) is celebrating a decade of success in producing cutting edge, rigorous and relevant research on wealth and financial wellbeing by publishing its annual report.
- The BRACE Rapid Evaluation Centre has had an article published in EClinical Medicine (The Lancet) where the collaboration between BRACE and RSET presents findings from a study to identify key characteristics of remote home monitoring models for COVID-19 exploring the important role it has for patients and staff experiences: Implementation of remote home monitoring models during COVID 19 pandemic.
- IRiS and NODE UK Japan hosted a joint webinar in April which explored the impact of Covid-19 on migrants with precarious legal status in the UK and Japan. The webinar can be viewed on YouTube.
- In April, Teaching Fellow Kelly Tighe presented at the UoB Children and Childhood Network Conference on The Power of Play. Her presentstion was entitled, 'Building Relationships with children through play: the importance of improving play practice in children and families social work.'
- As part of the Parent, Families and Allies Network, Simon Haworth presented at an event hosted by Research in Practice on developing parent advocacy in our child protection systems.
- BA PPE Student Jasmine Rai has received media interest on her dissertation: 'An exploration of the representations of Punjabi-Sikhs within Bollywood cinema and how this affects perceptions of their community.' She will soon be interviewed by the BBC Asia Network.
- Professor Harry Ferguson has published an article in The Guardian: By breaking the silence about patriarchy, men can help end violence against women.
- CHASM have published new findings on social housing and wellbeing
- SoSP staff have comepleted the Birmingham to Melbourne Challenge, exercising their way through 10,439 miles. Head of College Professor Richard Black has recorded a celebratory message on YouTube.
- Dr Louise Overton and Dr Chris Q Smith hosted an online workshop with stakeholders from the pensions industry, third sector, and academia to inform the fieldwork design and influencing strategy of the project Pension Decision-Making in the New Retirement Landscape. Additionally, Louise Overton and colleagues from University of York have recently published a paper in the Journal of Long Term Care. The paper offers background for a new NIHR/SSCR project to develop a decision tool to help older people make decisions about paying for care, starting soon.
